Beacon Project

Lesson: Learning Outside the Classroom

Class: Year 2 - Elm Year: 2025 - 2026

Over the past six weeks, a group of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from Woodchurch CE Primary School have taken part in the Beacon Project run by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service.

Throughout the programme, the children developed teamwork, resilience and problem‐solving skills while working alongside firefighters and participating in a range of practical challenges. As a school, we were impressed with how the children got to grips with every challenge they faced; working with empathy, consideration and a new sense of confidence.

In their final session, pupils completed a rescue simulation where they successfully located and rescued a trapped teaching assistant, Mrs Rimell, before working together to put out a fire. We are incredibly pleased to report that Mrs Rimell was saved safely, the “fire” was extinguished, and the pupils earned their certificates with pride. Merseyside Fire & Rescue kindly invited Mrs Carciero and Mr Stott to the presentation service; along with many very proud parents and carers. One parent told us, 'What an amazing experience it has been for them. I was lucky enough to watch them at work today! Mikey has loved every single minute of the project. Thank you for including him.'

Firefighters commented on the children’s excellent teamwork, determination and positive attitude, and Woodchurch CE Primary School shared how proud they are of how well the pupils represented their school. We are so very proud of their achievements and how the children showed our key school rules of 'Be Respectful, Be Ambitious and Be Proud'. That most definitely is #TheWoodchurchWay!
